Booking a barber or men’s grooming visit

Fades, beard trims, shaves and facials: how to find the right barber on Saloonly, what to say in the chair, and how often to go back.

· 4 min read

A good barber remembers how you like it. Getting there takes one or two visits where you explain it well. Here is how to find the right place and get the cut you meant.

Barbershop or men’s salon?

On Saloonly you can browse both. Barbershops tend to focus on cuts, fades, beards and shaves. Men’s salons often add colour, facials and grooming treatments. Unisex salons do men’s cuts too. Tap the kind you want in the search, or search for the service, such as “fade” or “beard”.

Pick the service, then the barber

Each service shows its price and how long it takes. A cut and beard together is usually one longer appointment, so pick both and Saloonly finds a time long enough for the two.

If someone recommended a particular barber, choose them by name. If you just want the next free chair, choose “Anyone free”.

Say it in numbers

“Short on the sides” means different things in different chairs. A few details make it clear:

  • Clipper guard numbers, if you know them: a number 2 on the sides, for example.
  • Where the fade starts: low, mid or high.
  • How much to take off the top, in fingers or centimetres.
  • Whether you want the neckline squared, rounded or tapered.
  • For a beard: the length you want to keep, and where the cheek and neck lines should sit.

A photo from your phone, of a cut you like on someone with hair like yours, does more than any description. You can mention it in the note when you book.

Shaves and facials

A hot-towel shave or a men’s facial is a good treat, but if your skin is sensitive, prone to bumps after shaving, or you use prescription skin products, tell the barber before they start. They can adjust the products and technique. If in doubt, they will say so.

How often to go back

As a rough guide, a sharp fade starts to soften after two or three weeks, a longer cut after four to six, and a shaped beard somewhere in between. Ask your barber what they would suggest for your hair, then book the next visit before you leave, or from Book again in My bookings when you are ready.

Good to know: Weekend mornings are often the first times to go. If you can go on a weekday, you will usually find more free times.

Paying

You pay at the shop, the way you always have. There is nothing to pay on Saloonly and no booking fee.
